The first thing that probably comes to mind when you think of Disney is its most notable and loveable character Mickey Mouse! Well, I have the cutest craft that will make all the Mickey fans smile. These DIY Mickey Mouse Cold Packs are easy, adorable, and only take 15 minutes!

DIY Mickey Mouse Cold Packs

It is time to break out the crafting supplies and maybe have some snacks like my Loaded Buffalo Chicken Tots (Just like they serve at Disney’s Magic Kingdom). Either way, I am certain you will love how easy this Mickey Mouse craft is to make. It’s perfect for someone who is just starting out crafting, and kids can help with a little bit of guidance.

Supplies Needed:

  • Black Felt (1 piece)
  • Red Felt ( 1 piece)
  • 1 cup Rice
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine – if you are looking for a good, inexpensive machine, this one is nice!
  • Scissors
  • Printable Mouse Template
  • Funnel
  • Pins
  • Marker

How To Make A Mickey Mouse Kids Cold Pack

First Step: You’ll need to print the printable mouse template then cut it out with sharp scissors.

Second Step: Take pins and attach the template to the piece of felt. Trace around it with a marker and cut the mouse shape out of the felt. You’ll need one red and one black piece of felt.

Third Step: Pin the pieces of felt together.

Fourth Step: Use a sewing machine to sew the edges, leaving 1/4 seam allowance. Leave a pocket on the bottom that is around an inch wide.

NOTE: If you are new to sewing, that means that you will need to leave an edge around the fabric that is 1/4 inch wide.

Fifth Step: Use a funnel and stick it in the 1-inch opening. Then carefully pour in the rice into the funnel.

Sixth Step: Next, sew the opening shut and try not to let any rice spill out.

Seventh Step: Put the mouse cold pack in the freezer until ready to use.

Eighth Step: Repeat the process as many times as needed to make how many you want.

Top Tips

I wanted to share a few tips I have figured out along the way that are pretty helpful.

  • Use good quality felt. I have found that using good quality fabric will make them last longer, and the felt is less likely to come apart with usage.
  • Don’t use the cold packs for too long. It’s best to place them on your sore spot for around 15-20 minutes at a time.
  • You can add essential oils to the packs. If you love essential oils, you can add the oil to the outside of the felt or add some drops to the rice. You can make any combination that you like, but I especially enjoy lavender.
  • Keep several on hand. You never know when they are going to come in handy, so I recommend having a few in the freezer ready to go.

Mickey Mouse Cold Pack FAQs

Can I Heat The Pack?

Yes, that is one of the things I adore about these cold packs. They can be tossed in the microwave and be warmed up. This is great if you have an injury that needs both hot and cold.

To warm the pack, simply place it in the microwave for 30-45 seconds. Check it and make sure it’s not too hot. Repeat if needed to reach the level of heat you are looking for. You will need to be mindful and not overheat the pack so the rice doesn’t get too hot, especially if you are placing the pack on kiddos, so they don’t get burned.

Uses For Cold Packs

There are many reasons why you might want to use a cold pack (or warm) for aches and pains. Here is a list of ideas that you could use the packs for.

  • Sprains – If you have a sprain, adding a cold pack to the sore area is helpful.
  • Headaches – Find yourself with some bad headaches or migraines? Sticking a cool rice pack on it can help get you some relief sooner.
  • Scrapes – It just feels better to place something cold on a scrape, especially for children. They will feel much better when they have a cold pack shaped like Mickey Mouse too!
  • Eyes – Whether you injured your eye, have a headache, or need to feel refreshed, adding cold packs to your eyes is great. These are a perfect size, and the fleece is soft.

Reasons To Make These Rice Packs

I wanted to share a few reasons why I think you will like having some of these cool packs around. Here are my favorite reasons to have them:

  • They are inexpensive! If you go to the store and pick up cool packs, you’ll see that they can’t get pretty expensive. Who wants to spend that much when you can make your own for super cheap.
  • Charming design. You already know how much of a fan I am of all things Disney, so to me, it doesn’t get much better than this design.
  • Easily customizable. You can swap the red felt for pink or any other color. It will be fun to play with all the different color combinations to see what you can come up with.
  • They make lovely gifts. Stuck on what to get a friend or loved one? No problem, make them some of these mouse cold packs. They will love it.
  • You can make different shapes. Not in the mood for a mouse shape? That’s more than fine, simply cut whatever shape you like and go with it.
  • It’s easy to adjust the size. You are welcome to make them as big or small as you want. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on your printer for resizing the template, or take it to your local print shop, and they can make different sizes.

I hope you have a blast making your Mickey Mouse Cold Packs! They are a lot of fun to make and take less than 20 minutes total time. You’ll just need the basic understanding of sewing, and you will be all set. Happy crafting, and be sure to let us see your results.
